Use of English
Part 3 - Word Formation
For Questions 1-8, read the text below and use the word given in capitals to form a word that fits in the gap.
Adjective Suffixes in Context
Learning adjective suffixes can feel (0) OVERWHELMING (OVERWHELM), but it becomes easier once you notice patterns. For instance, a child who asks questions all day is naturally (1) .......... (CURIOSITY), while a colleague who always meets deadlines is seen as (2) .......... (RELY). Some suffixes help you describe how something affects you: a documentary can be deeply (3) .......... (MOVE), whereas a long meeting may be simply (4) .......... (TIRE). Others express possibility or suitability: a plan that can be carried out is (5) .......... (DO), and a jacket that keeps you warm is (6) .......... (COMFORT). You can also use suffixes to show that something has a particular quality: a landscape full of drama is (7) .......... (PICTURE), and a person who avoids taking sides may appear (8) .......... (DECIDE). The key is to learn each adjective in a phrase you might actually use, rather than memorising lists in isolation.
