For Questions 1-8, read the text below and decide which answer best fits each gap.
School Assessment
Teachers in Malaysian matriculation programmes are often wary of relying too heavily on tests that reward memorisation alone. By Year 4, many pupils have already become adept at reproducing facts, yet struggle when asked to apply ideas in unfamiliar contexts. For that reason, effective multiple-choice tasks should be designed with great care. A good question does more than check whether a learner can recognise a term; it also reveals whether they can distinguish between plausible alternatives and avoid being (0) MISLED by superficial similarity. In practice, writing such items is far from straightforward. Distractors must be convincing enough to (1) .......... serious thought, but not so vague that more than one answer appears defensible. The wording should be concise, free (2) .......... ambiguity, and appropriate to the learners' level. At the same time, questions should cover a broad enough range of skills to (3) .......... against the risk of assessing only rote recall. If this balance is achieved, a test can serve not merely as a grading tool but as a means of diagnosing where understanding begins to (4) .......... down. For schools, then, the challenge is not simply to produce more questions, but to ensure that each one is fit (5) .......... purpose. Quantity may look impressive on paper, yet poorly written items can do more harm than good by giving a distorted (6) .......... of what pupils actually know. Well-constructed questions, by contrast, can (7) .......... light on misconceptions and help teachers refine subsequent lessons. In that sense, assessment is most valuable when it feeds (8) .......... future learning.
