The Nature of Love

For centuries, poets and philosophers have debated whether love is a (0) GENUINELY (GENUINE) human experience or merely a comforting illusion. In romantic literature, love is often presented as a force of almost supernatural (1) .......... (POWER), capable of transforming ordinary lives into something extraordinary. Yet modern psychology sometimes offers a more (2) .......... (SCEPTIC) account, suggesting that what we call love may be partly rooted in biological drives and social conditioning. This does not necessarily make it less meaningful, but it does challenge the (3) .......... (ASSUME) that love is always pure, selfless and permanent. Even so, there remains something deeply (4) .......... (PERSUADE) in the experience of loving and being loved. People continue to seek emotional (5) .......... (CLOSE) despite the risks of disappointment, betrayal and loss. Perhaps this is because love gives a sense of (6) .......... (COMPLETE) that few other experiences can match. To dismiss it as entirely artificial seems an (7) .......... (JUSTIFY) simplification. Whether love is "real" in a scientific sense may be open to debate, but its emotional consequences are surely (8) .......... (DENY).

What to do

For each gap you get one word in capitals which you have to change so the grammar and meaning fit in the sentence. Here you have to show how well you know word families and if you can change words by using prefixes and suffixes.

You need to read the whole text to get the writer’s opinion on the topic. That’s because sometimes a negative prefix will be required. There is usually at least one word requiring a negative prefix, so look out for these.

In the exam always write something. You never know, you might be lucky even if you are not sure of the answer!

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text so that you understand what it is about.
  2. Look at each sentence in detail.
  3. Think about what kind of word you need and whether you need a negative prefix or a suffix.
  4. Read the sentence again to check whether you need a plural form.
  5. Check your spelling, as it must be correct.
