Multilingual Offices

Modern companies increasingly recruit staff from different countries, and a multilingual workplace can bring clear advantages. Teams with varied linguistic backgrounds may be better equipped to deal with international clients and to draw (0) UPON a wider range of perspectives. Yet these benefits do not come without challenges. Even when employees have a good command of a shared language, subtle misunderstandings can still (1) .......... up during meetings or in emails. One common difficulty is that people may (2) .......... back from contributing ideas if they are worried about making mistakes in front of colleagues. This can lead managers to (3) .......... the false conclusion that quieter staff have less to offer, when in fact they may simply need more time to express complex thoughts. Differences in communication style can also give (4) .......... to tension. In some cultures, directness is valued, while in others it may be seen as rude. To prevent such problems, companies should set (5) .......... clear communication practices and encourage patience on all sides. Training can also help staff become more aware of idiomatic expressions that might otherwise pass (6) .......... unnoticed by native speakers but confuse everyone else. Ultimately, successful multilingual workplaces do not happen by accident; they depend (7) .......... thoughtful leadership and a willingness to listen carefully. When that happens, language differences can become an asset rather than a (8) ..........

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
